Patola GallaryWhat is a Patola Saree? - By Master Artisan Nirmal Salvi
A Patola Saree is one of India’s most prized handwoven silk textiles, originating from Patan, Gujarat. The word “Patola” refers to the double ikat weaving technique – a labour-intensive process where both warp and weft silk threads are individually resist-dyed before weaving begins. This pre-planned precision is what creates the signature reversibility: a genuine Patola Saree looks identical on both sides.
Nirmal Salvi is one of India’s most celebrated Patola Saree artisans, carrying forward a 700-year-old family weaving tradition from Patan. Every saree in this collection is an original Patan Patola – GI-tagged, handwoven on a traditional loom, and takes 3 to 18 months to complete depending on the complexity of the double ikat pattern.
